As a Mets fan, this off season has been nothing but special. Especially recently with them signing one of the best short stops in the game, Carlos Correa. This is a very good turning point forĀ baseball.
It’s giving teams a chance to win championships
Before, the Mets were owned by Steve Cohen in 2020. The Mets were known for being a cheap organization. They let core players of their team go. And settle for cheaper players. These players were not as good. A good example of this is Daniel Murphy: a lead player in the Mets 2015 World Series run.
However, the Wilpon Family were not willing to pay him. After his amazing postseason run. They let him go to a Rival Nationals Team. With teams like the Mets. Plus more teams that spend, like the Dodgers, Padres and Phillies. This makes these teams competitive.
Fans’ reactions
The spending is made by the Mets, and Steve Cohen has been a Mets fan his whole life. He wants nothing more but to see a championship. Since his ownership, super star players have come to the Mets.
The first one being Fransico Lindor in a trade. Lindor had twenty-six home runs. Starling Marte, who was a all-star in 2022, has a high of 292 average. Marte also had eighteen stolen bases. Max Scherzer had a great first season with the Mets. Scherzer had a 2.29 era, and a whip of 0.91.
This off season has been his biggest spending spree. After losing their ace Jacob deGrom to Texas, the Mets signed Cy Young and Justin Verlander in 2022. Verlander is now paired up with his old Teammate Max Scherzer. Furthermore, the Mets have acquired two top ten pitchers, and Max isn’t even their best pitcher.
Overseas was the next stop for the Mets. Kodai Senga adds a little more youth, and a new pitch called the fork ball. Now to end off 2022, the Mets signed the top infielder in the free agent class Carlos Correa. The Mets will now have an all-star infield with Correa at third base and Lindor at shortstop. On paper, the Mets have one of the best teams in Baseball. When and if the Mets win a title, it will mean so much for the fans and the city of New York.
Cons
There are always negatives to everything. There is no luxury tax in baseball, which means spending is more common. In addition, a small fine is paid. If they use too much money, the fine is small. So, Cohen could care less. America is another reason.
Lastly, it’s proven that a third of Americans go into debt because of Spending from teams. One third isn’t a lot. Money is still present out of peoples’ Pockets. The MLB also has to pay more money for the Mets to do their thing. But in Return, the Mets make money. The MLB makes more money.
Mr. William Ruetsch, Mets fan since 1969 said, “It’s good for the Mets but I’m not sure if it is as good for baseball. If you look at who has won the World Series and pennants, the smaller cities like Pittsburg, Kansas City, and Minneapolis have shown well with less of a budget.”
Conclusion
As more money comes to the world, comes more spending, even for Baseball. As time goes on, spending will continue. Besides, the Mets aren’t the first team to do this. As a fan of a team who went from being cheap to spending Monopoly money to win, I’m glad to have Steve Cohen as the owner of the New York Mets.
